Spiral Diner lays claim to the impressive standing of “serving organic vegan food in the Lone Star state.” You heard right: vegan food, as in no meat of any kind. Since opening as a modest lunch counter in 2002, Spiral Diner has since grown to two locations in Dallas and Fort Worth. Spiral Diner stands on strong moral beliefs of using mostly organic ingredients, recycled materials, and cruelty-free cleaning products. As for the food: the diner serves up breakfast all day, fresh smoothies, salads, sandwiches and wraps using tofu and meat substitutes, and a variety of classic entrees. Spiral also offers soy protein burgers tasty enough to delight even carnivores and vegan ice cream. There are also dishes free of gluten, nuts, and other allergens. Need more convincing? Spiral's also got freshly baked custom cakes and a lengthy beer list!

Any antipasti dish featuring salumi, cured in-house, is a must, though other favorites include fois gras, salads with duck confit, and oyster dishes. Light, flavorful entrees include beef tongue, pork shoulder, gnocchi, and pork ragu. Prices for entrees run $25 to $35, a bargain for the array of unique tastes. If you can, save room for dessert like walnut and ricotta cannoli with apples and rosemary.

The Ginger Man may sound like a character from a Grimm story, and the creaky house the bar inhabits might also look like it came out of a German fairytale, but don’t let that fool you—The Ginger Man is a serious place for beer experts. Having won numerous awards, including Best Beer Joint by the Dallas Observer three years in a row, The Ginger Man offers 71 beers on tap and 100 bottled varieties, including some rare brews. Fun events like Mystery Beer Day (the name you draw is the beer you drink), Rare Beer Tasting, and live musical performances make The Ginger Man a draw any night of the week. There are three outdoor areas to enjoy the brews: one in front, one in the backyard, and one upstairs. Yummy bar foods include the German Bratwurst, Pesto Cheese Sandwich, and Spinach Artichoke Dip. For any fan of beer and joviality, The Ginger Man demands a visit.

Focusing on fresh ingredients and authenticity, Fireside Pizzas creates hand-crafted, artisan pizzas according to the “pie-making disciplines of old.” Made with fine ingredients (some imported from Italy, some grown locally in Dallas), Fireside Pizza features unique pies and toppings as well as the old standbys. Each pizza is topped with fire-roasted sauce and a four-cheese blend of Fireside Pizza’s award-winning cheeses, then cooked in a pecan wood fired oven. Guests can order a specialty pie (like the Peta Pie with Goat Cheese and Portobello Mushrooms, or the Hot N’ Crumbled Jimmy’s Spice Italian Sausage), or create their own choosing from additional toppings like Texas Beef Sausage and Whipped Ricotta cheese. With a large back patio, custom made booths, and viewing areas near the bar to watch pies being cooked, Fireside Pies is a great place to watch a game, meet with friends, or just relax.

Forget the soggy chalupas at Taco Bell and head over to one of Mi Cocina’s 15 locations for an authentic Tex-Mex experience. The first Mi Cocina opened in 1991 as a modest twelve-table restaurant. Today, each restaurant features swanky interiors carefully designed to reflect its specific neighborhood. One has wall hangings with the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty, another features Andy Warhol-like paintings, yet another is rustic Southwestern with a fireplace—though each Mi Cocina is sleek and modern.
The menu reflects the founders’ devotion to great food, using only the highest quality ingredients in each recipe. Meals with names like “Mama’s Tacos” and “Raina’s Tex-Mex Basics” give a personal touch to the menu. The prices are right, especially the $8.75 lunch special that includes three components— combinations of tacos, enchiladas, burritos, or rice and beans. Combining stylish dining with classic dishes made from fresh ingredients, Mi Cocina is the destination for Mexican comfort food.
